There have been many national teams in South Africa’s rugby history – the Springboks, the South African Coloured Rugby Board team, which was first chosen in 1938, the SARU XV, the Leopards, the Proteas, the Gazelles, the Junior Springboks amongst the seniors. The South African A team is a recent concept.
Some countries, including South Africa, called it their B team, but gradually everybody has adopted the French custom of calling it the A team. France A has for years played in the FIRA competition except when France was to play Romania when they played the full French side.
